Meet the Coaches


Melissa Navntoft - Head Coach

navntoftCoach Melissa Navntoft is entering her 11th season as Head Coach of the SCC Softball Team. Navntoft brings a career record of 251-192.  In her 2nd season the Blackhawks finished with a 39-6 record, most wins in school history, 2nd place conference finish and led the Blackhawks to a NJCAA Division II National Championship. After winning the National Title in 2003, the Blackhawks moved to Division I. In her 5th season the Blackhawks finished with a 43-14 record, 1st place conference finish and a National appearance in the NJCAA Division I National Tournament where the Blackhawk's finished 7th place.  In 2009 the Blackhawks finished with a 29-17 record, 1st place conference finish, 1st place Regional and District Champions and qualified for a national appearance in the NJCAA Division I National Tournament where the Blackhawks finished itop twelve in the nation.  Coach Navntoft is a native of Burlington, Iowa earning all-state honors. Melissa began her college career at the University of Northern Iowa. While attending UNI, Melissa was a member of the softball team. Upon finishing her softball career at UNI, Melissa transferred to Western Illinois where she graduated with her Bachelor's Degree in Liberal Arts.

 Larry Heath - Assistant Coach

coach heathCoach Larry Heath is entering his first season as Assistant Coach of the SCC Softball Team. This is his first stint as assistant coach for the Blackhawks, however, Heath held the reigns of Head Softball Coach at Southeastern from 1999-2001, where he had a career record of 84-63, his team was the regional runner up in 2000. Heath is also the Head Softball Coach at Burlington High School, where he has been for 23 seasons. He holds a career high school coaching record of 893-294. He has appeared at the Iowa High School State Tournament five times ('87, '96, '99, '03, '09) and was inducted into the Iowa Softball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2007. Heath has also coached baskeball at the high school ranks for 21 years and holds a career record of 263-180. Coach Heath earned his Bachelor's Degree from Iowa Wesleyan College in Elementary Education and Coaching. He has taught at the middle school level for thirty three years. He resides in Burlington with his wife Maureen and has four children; Natalie, Taylor, Melanie and Michelle.

 Brian Mixer – Assistant Coach

BrianCoach Brian Mixer is entering his first season as Assistant Coach of the SCC Softball team. Coach Mixer is also the Varsity Assistant Softball Coach at Burlington High School, just completing his 7th season with the program. In those seven seasons Coach Mixer has helped the Grayhounds reach the Iowa High School State tournament in 2009 and 2011, also capturing a MAC title in 2008. He also is the Head Sophomore Football coach at BHS, he coached in the Girls basketball program at BHS for 10 years and has also coached and presided over the Burlington Sluggers ASA program. Coach Mixer is a graduate 1985 of BHS, attended SCC and has been employed by General Electric for 23 years as a Calibration Technician. He resides in Burlington with his wife Lori and has four children: Hope, Zachary, Hannah and Megan.

Tina Gonzalez - Student Assistant Coach

TinaTina Gonzalez is entering her first season as the Student Assistant Coach of the SCC Softball Team. Gonzalez graduated from Burlington Community High School in 2009 where she was a four year letter winner, All-State Honorable Mention, Mississippi Athletic Conference Honorable Mention, MAC All Academic Team, MAC 2nd team Utility Player, and All Hawk Eye Team. She attends SCC and played for the Blackhawks during the 2010–2011 season and made ICCAC 1st team All-Region. She resides in Burlington with Grandparents Kevin and Cindy and her sister Alexandra.
