S-STEM Scholarship
SCC offers a competitive, two-year renewable scholarship for students planning to study fields in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM).
The Success in STEM (S-STEM) program is funded by a $558,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to provide scholarships to up to 36 SCC students through 2015.
Requirements
To be considered for the S-STEM, candidates must:
- Demonstrate financial need (a completed FAFSA will provide this information, visit www.fafsa.gov to apply)
- Be a current SCC student, high school senior, or potential student who enroll full-time in one of the following associate degree programs: Electronics Technology, Drafting Technology or Pre-Engineering college transfer
- Have completed Algebra I or higher and at least one lab science course in high school
- Have a GPA of 3.0 or higher OR a recommendation from a high school teacher
- Be U.S. citizen, permanent resident, national, or refugee
How to Apply
Although the standard scholarship application deadline is April 1, interested students should still contact the SCC Foundation Office directly at (319) 208-5062 for application information, as some S-STEM scholarships may still be available. The scholarship is for the academic year.

Program Overview
Success in STEM Scholarships are funded by a $558,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF).
The scholarship project is under the direction of Co-Principal Investigators, Physics instructor Dr. Chris Sedlack and Drafting Technology instructor Larry Shacklett.
The NSF S-STEM program was established by the National Science Foundation in accordance with the American Competitiveness and Workforce Improvement Act of 1998. The Act reflects the national need to increase substantially the number of American scientists and engineers. SCC's S-STEM program will fund up to ten students per year until 2015. The project promotes full-time enrollment, academic achievement, and successful transfer and completion of an associate's degree or transfer for completion of a bachelor’s degree in STEM majors or programs.
There are a limited number of scholarships. The selection process is competitive and the award will be based on the amount of financial need, up to and including 100% tuition and books. It is a two-year renewable scholarship.
