2010 Taste of Fine Wine, Arts & Ale Scholarship Fundraiser Breaks Record!
The 4th annual Taste of Fine Wine, Arts & Ale was held on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at the Pzazz! Event Center in Burlington, Iowa. Nearly 250 patrons enjoyed the evening which showcased 80 wines from 11 vendors, including local wineries like Heartland Harvest, Wide River Winery, and Baxter Winery and from HyVee's many distributors. Beers and ales from the Lost Duck Brewing Company, Millstream Microbrewry, Fleck Sales and Golden Eagle Distributing were also available for sampling, and Pzazz! chefs featured an array of deliciious hot and cold appetisers and desserts.
Proceeds from the event will fund SCC scholarships and college projects.
"Even in these challenging economic times, our generous patrons stepped up to help us raise over $21,000. We were concerned that we might find it difficult to even meet last year's record of $20,000, but our donors and sponsors did not disappoint," says SCC Foundation Chair, Terri Dowell.
The event included a large student art show where a number of pieces were available for purchase. Silent and live auctions featured 70 unique and exciting items donated by college employees, alumni and friends of SCC. Click here to view the entire program.
The spring 2011 event is currently in the planning stages. Tickets will remain at $50 and Sponsor Tables for eight people will again be $500 and will include reserved seating, proximity to the auction stage, party favors, and hors d'oeuvres and desserts served at the table. Great River Entertainment/Pzazz! will sponsor a brunch for up to 80 people at 12 Noon on Sunday, May 16, 2010 featuring Olivia Myers Baker, Miss Iowa 2008 and the 2009 Miss America 2nd Runner Up. Ms. Myers Baker will show videos and photos and share what really happens during the weeks leading up to and during the actual Miss America Pageant. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for children 12 and under. All proceeds will fund scholarships at Southeastern Community College.
Second runner-up honors and a $20,000 scholarship were awarded to Miss Iowa Olivia Myers. Her talent at the 2009 Miss America pageant was a tap dance to “Fever”, and her personal platform is Teaching Tolerance: Fostering a Just and Caring Culture from the Classroom Out.” It’s believed Myers’ finish is the highest for a Miss Iowa since Catherine Ann Lemkau of Muscatine was first runner-up in 1992.
According to a Cedar Rapids Gazette article, Myers said she had always dreamed of being in the Miss America pageant, where she tap-danced during the talent competition.
“I began dancing when I was 5 years old, and shortly after that, I watched my first Miss America pageant on TV and knew right away that was something I wanted to do,” she said.
“I always just liked tapping the best,” she added. “I think it came most naturally to me, and I just thought it was cool — the idea that you could have a piece of metal on your foot and it could make music, kind of like an instrument.” Myers — whose hometown, Sperry, is north of Burlington — won the title of Miss Burlington and then was named Miss Iowa 2008 on her second try.
After that, she took to the sea with titleholders from other states, living on the Queen Mary as part of the “Countdown to the Crown” reality series on TLC.
Myers said she couldn’t believe how far she made it in the competition.
“I had prepared myself mentally, kind of tried to believe that I could become Miss America,” she said. “But when you get there and you’re going through the competition, it’s almost hard to fathom that even happening, and so to come so close was really exciting.”
In August 2009, Ms. Myers wed her long-time beau, Clay Baker, son of SCC Foundation Board member, Denise Baker. Clay and Olivia live in Iowa City. Olivia is student teaching History at Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids and will graduate from the University of Iowa in May. She hopes to find a teaching job in the vicinity. Clay is currently working for the Belin-Blank Center for Talented and Gifted Education at the University. He will begin law school at the University of Iowa this fall.

The Southeastern Community College Foundation was established in 1982 to attract, manage and disburse contributions for the support of Southeastern Community College. Areas in which assistance will be rendered include, but are not limited to:
- enhancement and extension of facilities, equipment, and services and,
- awarding of scholarships, grants, and/or loans to students, faculty, staff and departments of the college or to the college governing board.
The SCC Foundation provides an opportunity to invest in the development of our regional workforce and gives the gift of a quality education to many who otherwise could not afford this important advantage. The Southeastern Community College Alumni Association (SCCAA) was formed in 1991. Membership is open to anyone who has completed a 3 credit hour course at SCC or one if its predecessor institutions. The SCCAA Board of Directors adopted the following mission statement:
"...to encourage lifelong interest in Southeastern Community College by its alumni and friends by creating an atmosphere which promotes positive feelings and interactions between the college and its alumni through a variety of actions, events, services, and communication."
